Use Your Talents

I recently read an article about Jessica Haas, a young girl who competed and won the Miss Tennessee Pageant back in 2013. The interesting thing about this young girl is that she grew up in real poverty, she and her mother often living out of their car. She was encouraged by a teacher at a young age to enter a beauty pageant and won, so she kept on entering pageants.

The unique thing about Jessica is her love for art. When she was determining what talent she would use at these pageants, she wanted to incorporate her love for art. She worked with a teacher who helped her refine her art to “speed art”, where she could paint a picture in less than 90 seconds. It’s truly amazing to watch. You can view a video of her speed painting here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhUwFJDBK14

Many people tried to talk her out of speed painting as a talent, but as you can see, it is indeed quite a talent. In fact, it’s pretty amazing to watch. Here’s a young woman who came from literally nothing and accomplished so much because she decided to utilize her God-given talents of beauty, poise, and art.

Each of us has a talent. Sometimes your talent may not seem overly apparent, but one or more talents are there. It’s our challenge to discover how to put them to use.

Even with Myasthenia Gravis, our talents are useful. Maybe your talent is singing. You can still sing with MG. Maybe not as long and as loud as you once could, but you can still sing. So use it. Even if it’s just singing around the house, it will bring you joy. The best part is, it will also bring joy to others who hear you sing.

Have you always had a knack for helping people? You still can. Volunteer your time or get involved in your church or community and see where you can put your talents to work.

I’ve always enjoyed writing. I find great satisfaction in turning thoughts into words. If my words help even one person, then I’ve put them to good use.

Rediscover your talent if you’ve misplaced it. Start practicing it again. Look for ways to use your talent to help others. That’s when you begin to reap the benefits of the talent God has given you.

Now, don’t overdo it and exacerbate your symptoms, but do what you can, when you can. God didn’t give you that talent just so you can remember it. He gave it to you to use, to help, to enjoy.
