I want to start with a joke this morning to help lead into the real topic of today’s blog. Here goes:
An elderly man worth hundreds of millions of dollars began experiencing poor health. He asked his son to come visit him so they could talk about his inheritance. When he arrived, they sat down and talked. The son hadn’t really been involved in his father’s business or foundation, so it was good they had a chance to discuss everything.
“Before your mother died,” the father told him, “We discussed how the estate would be handled and we both agreed it should all go to you.” The father provided his son the lawyer’s information and told him that when he passed, the son should contact his father’s lawyer as the lawyer would be settling the estate.
Before he left, the father said to his son, “Tomorrow is a meeting with the foundation. I’d like you to be there so I can introduce you to all of them.” The son respectfully agreed to attend.
The next day as the son entered the building where his father’s office was located, he found the most beautiful woman he had ever seen sitting behind the receptionist desk on the building’s first floor.
“Excuse me,” he said to the beautiful young woman, “I’m supposed to attend a board meeting for my father’s foundation. Can you tell me where I can find his office?”
The beautiful receptionist replied, “I’d be happy to help you. What’s your father’s name?”
“It’s John Winthrop,” the son replied getting lost in the woman’s eyes.
When she had pulled it up on her computer, she said, “Mr. Winthrop’s office is in Suite 1420. That’s on the 14th floor. You can take the elevators right around the corner.”
The son couldn’t help himself, so he said, “You know, my father is in poor health and is only expected to live a few more months. When he’s gone, I will inherit his entire estate worth hundreds of millions of dollars. I think you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen, so here’s my card. Call me sometime.”
The woman smiled and took his card.
A month later, the beautiful woman married his father.
It’s all about timing. It’s also all about timing when it comes to taking your Myasthenia Gravis medication. I know when I’m late taking a dose of my Mestinon, or for some reason skip it entirely, it throws my system completely off.
I take Mestinon every four hours. When I’m late taking a dose, my eye drooping, my leg fatigue, my hoarse voice all start getting worse. It’s not too bad if I’m less than an hour late, but anything beyond that and I’m hurting.
When I finally take the dose, it seems like it takes longer to kick in. To top it off, my medication reminder on my phone is now off and I have to try to remember subsequent doses and times. Worse yet, the reminders remind me to take a dose, but it’s not yet time because I was late with the last dose. That can cause confusion and overmedicating.
Try to follow your doctor’s instructions and stick to your meds schedule as much as possible. If you are late taking a dose, write down the time you took it so you can calculate when the next dose is due.
It’s all about timing when it comes to medications. They only last so long in your system. The closer you stick to your regular schedule, the better off you’ll be.
