Enjoying Fall with Myasthenia Gravis

Fall brings crisp air, vibrant leaves, and a welcome break from summer’s heat, which can be refreshing for those living with Myasthenia Gravis (MG). The cooler temperatures can help managing symptoms, like muscle fatigue and weakness, a little easier. We don’t get to enjoy the change of seasons as easily here in the south, but for most of the country fall means a break from the summer’s heat.

The fall weather is perfect for short walks. Besides getting to enjoy the changing leaves, the exercise can help boost your mood and energy without triggering MG flare-ups. Just remember to always pace yourself, take breaks, drink plenty of fluids, and don’t overdo it. Bring a family member or a friend. Not only will they be excellent support if you start running low on energy, but the conversations you will share will be amazing.

Don’t forget to dress appropriately. Fall’s fluctuating temperatures can be tricky. Layering lightweight clothing allows you to adjust to chilly mornings and warm afternoons more easily. You’ll want to try to prevent overheating or getting too cold, which can stress your body. For MG patients sensitive to cold, which can sometimes stiffen muscles, make sure you have additional layers with you.

My favorite part of fall are the seasonal foods. I just love autumn’s harvest foods like pumpkin, apples, and even root vegetables. They can help support overall health, which is vital for managing MG. I also enjoy chilis and soup. There’s nothing better than coming in from the outside and warming up with a nice bowl of chili.

Cooler weather may tempt you to do more. There’s always yard work and for some reason we have it in our heads that one leaf on our lawn is one leaf too many. Your yard doesn’t have to be perfect! Energy conservation is key with MG. Plan your yard work and all fall activities with rest periods in mind. If you will be attending a fall festival, choose a time with smaller crowds to avoid fatigue of standing in long lines.

Fall is a great time to enjoy low-key social activities that align with the limitations MG can cause. Host a small gathering with close friends to sit around a fire pit, gather on a porch and talk about old times, or enjoy a movie. Even book clubs are a great way to stay connected with friends. These activities provide connection without physical strain, helping combat the isolation MG can sometimes bring.

By pacing yourself and embracing fall’s many offerings, you can enjoy the season’s beauty while managing Myasthenia Gravis. Listen to your body, plan ahead, and enjoy the crisp, refreshing days of autumn.
