A reader recently contacted me and stated she has one eyelid that closes and shuts due to drooping during the day and then the other eyelid will close and shut. She asked if I’ve ever experienced this.
I’ve never had my eyelids close and shut completely. They droop until they are about half-way closed when I get tired, but I’ve never had them close and shut completely. Usually when my eyelids droop the worst is towards the end of my medication cycle. Taking the next dose of Mestinon usually reduces the drooping effect.
Is anyone else experiencing drooping eyelids that close and shut completely? I can just assume this could lead to a dangerous situation as you wouldn’t be able to safely navigate around a room. The only advice I was able to provide was to contact her neurologist. Hopefully they can get her on a medication that will prevent this from happening.
That’s one of the strange things about Myasthenia Gravis. It hits each patient differently and to various stages of severity. It’s progressive, so sooner or later we all may experience this, but for the time being, I’m just thankful my medication still works and helps me keep my symptoms under control.
When something like this is bothering you, don’t be afraid to reach out for help. You can always talk to your doctor or you can obtain assistance on the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America’s website at https://myasthenia.org. While I’m no expert, I’m always willing to help in any way that I can, even if that means only pointing you to the right direction. I’m glad my friend felt comfortable enough to reach out to me. Although I wasn’t able to provide much help, maybe posting this for all to see may provide some additional tips from some of you.
You’re not alone in this. Sometimes it feels like it, but there are resources available and you’ll always have a friend here. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help. That doesn’t make you weaker; it makes you stronger because you’re utilizing the resources available to you.
While you’re at it, say a little prayer for my friend that she may find relief from her eyelids closing completely. Together we’re #MGStrong!
