Do It Today

Sometimes it seems that time is moving so fast. I’ve always heard that happens as you age, but sometimes I think we push things a little faster than we need to.

It’s April. Last weekend we stopped at Hobby Lobby. They had two aisles completely stocked with Thanksgiving items. Granted, there were still some aisles with summer and 4th of July items, but they were getting ready for Thanksgiving. Not Labor Day. Not Halloween. Thanksgiving.

Initially, I thought they were crazy. When I began to think about this a little more, however, I realized stores don’t really have a chance to promote Thanksgiving. From the first of September (or earlier) until the end of October, it’s all Halloween. The day after Halloween, the stores must magically transform into Christmas. Wasting time on promoting Thanksgiving is crazy when Christmas is so much more lucrative. Maybe Hobby Lobby isn’t so crazy after all. It’s early and it seems to be pushing time even faster, but they’ve now carved out a niche for Thanksgiving that they otherwise wouldn’t have. That’s actually pretty genius!

Sometimes you have to carve out a special niche for things or else the opportunity to do so could slip through your fingers. People in compromised health or living with progressive conditions like Myasthenia Gravis have an even greater incentive to make time for things today. Who really knows what tomorrow will bring?

Have you ever wanted to travel? What’s stopping you? If you have MG and it’s under control with medication, then there’s probably no better time to travel than now. Sooner or later, you may not be able to do so.

Have you always wanted to write a book? What’s stopping you? You still have all your mental faculties. Why not do it now?

Hobby Lobby made a conscious decision to carve out some space for Thanksgiving. It probably goes against the opinions of many, but Hobby Lobby recognized if they don’t do it now, they will never have the chance. Perhaps that’s the philosophy we should take. If there’s something you want to do, then do it now. It may not be the perfect time, it may not even be popular with everyone, but if you do it now, at least you won’t miss out on the opportunity.

Just out of curiosity, I looked up some famous quotes on procrastination. Here’s what I found:

“It’s the job that’s never started that takes longest to finish.” J.R.R. Tolkien

“Someday is not a day of the week.” Janet Daily

“In delay, there lies no plenty.” William Shakespeare

“How soon ‘not now’ becomes ‘never’.” Martin Luther

“There’s no better time than today.” Greg Olsen

Okay, so that last one isn’t a famous quote, but it’s still good advice!
