June is MG Awareness Month

This morning I received an email from the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA) asking people to take action to raise awareness for MG during MG Awareness Month this June. They shared the following ideas:

  • Share your MG journey with friends and followers on social media
  • Tell your story on the MG blog
  • Light up a local landmark in teal
  • Host a community fundraiser to support the MGFA or take the DARE to CARE fundraising challenge
  • Request an MG Awareness Month proclamation from state or local government
  • Pitch your story to a local radio show or newspaper, or ask an influencer you follow to spotlight MG in a post
  • Share a photo of your awareness activities on the MGFA MG Awareness Month wall
  • Wear your MG Awareness gear all month long

Why is it so important to get involved? MG Awareness activities help people understand what Myasthenia Gravis is and how a diagnosis impacts patients and their families. Increasing awareness also helps support programming and fund cutting-edge research leading to better treatments and a cure for MG.

Did you catch that last part? ….a cure for MG! Maybe it’s a bit too late for some of us, but there are thousands of people in the early stages of their lives who are diagnosed with MG. If a cure is found, maybe they won’t have to struggle through life or worry about what lies ahead. Even more than that, imagine people first receiving a diagnosis of MG and then immediately provided with a cure so they don’t have to deal with it at all. Wouldn’t that be amazing???

Last year was my first year participating in MG Awareness Month and it was heartwarming to see how much support I received from family and friends who support me in this battle. People I hadn’t seen in years were wearing MG bracelets for me…for me! What I learned from this is I’m not in it alone. I have the love and support of so many people around me. That keeps me going. That gives me strength.

Although MG Awareness Month is intended to increase awareness of MG, it also serves to remind us how much support we have from our family and friends. I strongly encourage you to get involved, share the message, share the awareness, and share the love this June during MG Awareness Month.
